I feel my final project on acupuncture represents a good example of my attitudes and beliefs of holistic medicine and healing. With holistic medicine all components of health and wellbeing are addressed. It's a wellness approach that addresses the body, mind and spirit or the physical, emotional/mental and spiritual aspects of an individual.
Acupuncture allows for all the aspects of holistic health to be addressed. A holistic health approach doesn't view the body, mind and spirit as separate entities. It looks for the underlying causes of symptoms, rather than just covering up the symptoms. Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning. The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being. It is my opinion that acupuncture does look for the underlying cause of the symptoms and addresses these findings with a holistic approach.
The body, mind and spirit are intertwined and not independent of one another. A treatment approach can be complimentary and/or alternative without necessarily being holistic. However, most holistic approaches are considered to be complimentary or alternative. Acupuncture offers a holistic healing approach. Because acupuncture represents a holistic healthcare approach it represents my feelings about what holistic health truly is. During acupuncture the mind body and spirit are all affected and utilized to maximize positive treatment outcome.
This project gave me an opportunity to try acupuncture and experience its results. I found the treatment totally encompassing. By this I mean all aspects of holistic health – mind, body and spirit were influenced during both of my acupuncture sessions. I was a bit surprised that I would feel the effects in all aspects during each session. It was a bit overwhelming to experience so much in less than a one hour treatment session. Partly I feel this was because I knew I was there as part of my final project – so I felt myself working a bit too much during my treatments. I do think this limited my ability to respond to the treatment and I had to struggle to keep my mind engaged in trying to remember all details of the experience so they could complete the project.
It was a great experience and I do think I may try it again in the future. I feel as though I want to experience a few other forms of complementary and alternative approaches so I can find which one is the best fit for me. I have experienced massage, bodywork and a bit of imagery in the past. Although I had a positive result from my acupuncture treatments I feel had a more complete experience during some massage/bodywork sessions I’ve had in the past.
What I think is important to remember is that many of the alternative/complementary interventions utilized overlapping and simultaneous methods. Music, imagery and aromatherapy are often utilized in conjunction with other methods. This is one aspect of holistic intervention I relate to and enjoy the most. The one word I feel describes holistic health for me is “encompassing”. My personal experience did tap into the core of my existence and I felt the completeness the holistic approach offers. Maureen
